Wolf and Moon

I will be posting this poem on Jingle’s Poetry Potluck, week #45. This week’s theme is Nature and Life, and, to me, this poem is the epitome of the topic. It speaks of the circle of life and in its deepest recesses ther lies within its verses a hnt of the people that inhabit this world.

Wolf and Moon

Winter moon in blackest sky

Silver hole in the night

Shadowed visage upon it

Casting white spears of light

Snow beneath it radiant

A field of diamonds glistening

Starving hare with frightened eyes

Laid back ears…. listening

Dark silhouette on silver eye

Grey wolf sings a mournful tune

Serenades the empty night

As it worships the rising moon

Wolf and moon, like lovers

Longing for sweet embrace

From a love too far, yet close

Pulsing hearts begin to race

Distracted then by wafting scent

The hare in the valley… so still

Grey one slips from the lofty rock

Crosses valley to make the kill

Silver light on crimson snow

Snap of bones and tearing flesh

Muzzle deep in midnight supper

Frenzied feast while kill is fresh

  5. Awww feel sorry for the Hare but, they all got to eat and it’s kill or be killed I guess.

    • That’s the way it works, I reckon. Sad, but true.

WoW! Fantastic imagery throughout. I love the visual of the grey wolf serenading the night.
It’s always sad when one life has to be sacrificed to feed another, but I guess that’s the circle of nature and life.

    Very well done, Charles!

    • Thanks, Andy. Yes that–the cirlce of life–is why I thought this was a perfect poem for this weeks theme.

If you enjoy the potato salad, then I enjoy your serving of roast beef! Very meaty and it leaves me with a satiated feeling after the read. :-)

Thanks for stopping by for a read (or two?) Rosie. Your comments are delicious!

  15. A thrilling story, with a poetic rhythm. It does seem that even in its seemingly cruel states, nature’s beauty still shines through.

  16. Awesome poem! The viscious side of nature.
