For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother. Matthew 12:50
I think God is talking to me lately about things that scare people away from Him. He wants me to tell you not to be afraid.
Too many times, when people come near to God, whether it be by going to church or asking a Christian, “what’s it all about, what do I have to do?”, they are frightened away by the thou shalts and thou shalt nots.
Today’s verse is a sample of one that might intimidate not just someone seeking to know what it’s all about, but it might even discourage someone—like me—who thinks they know what’s going on. I know I don’t always do the things God would have me do, and so I tend to think I can never be Jesus’ brother. But that’s not true!
What we have to keep in mind as we read the Bible—especially verses like this one—is that Jesus was always teaching. He used examples and parables, and though the ultimate would be for each of us to do the will of the Father at all times, it just isn’t going to happen—with any one!
Give your heart to Jesus and love God. Do it the best you can then allow Him to help you get better at it. Trust Him! You will be amazed at what happens when you do!
