I was riding my exercise bike this morning, listening to one of my favorite CDs, and just looking around the room. My eyes fell upon a copy of my book, Be Still, and I gazed at it, thinking what a wonderful picture of Mom it is that adorns the cover of the book. As the song, You Raise Me Up (Celtic Woman), began to play, all sorts of thoughts rushed through my mind, and the following poem was written shortly thereafter.
She Sings to Me
When I was a child
She sang to me
And continues singing today
Songs not of words
And without accompanying melody
Truth be said
She doesn’t think she can carry a tune
But what she doesn’t understand
Though she’s beginning to
Is the song she sings is her life
No, she’s not perfect
None of us are
But she is the beautiful person
God made her to be
And she has shared her song
Not only with me
But with all the world around her
I dwell on the song her life is
And in my heart I thank her
For raising me
For you see
She didn’t just train me
In the way I should go
And help me to be who I am
She has raised me up with her prayers
And placed me on God’s shoulders
So That I might be all that I can be
There is no higher place
No place I’d rather be
And tears well in my eyes
Each time I count the blessing
Of the mother God gave to me
