We knew the day was drawing near, but it came at a bad time. Sherry’s momma, Nell King, left us early this morning, and is now wrapped in the arms of Jesus. Read the rest of this entry »

Pennies From Heaven
This is an oldie, but a goodie, and gets me about as close to being famous as I will probably ever be. I wrote this little poem in 1998, in honor of my grandfather, Luther “Bunk” Stringer’s passing, and it has since been all over the world via the Internet. You will find it on many web sites, and I get it in an email every year or so; usually from someone who doesn’t know I wrote it. Some of you have seen it on this blog before, and perhaps some have seen it other places. In any case, I hope you enjoy it. Read the rest of this entry »

I don’t suppose any of you ever heard this: “This is going to hurt me, more than it hurts you.” Read the rest of this entry »

There is deceit in the hearts of those who plot evil, but joy for those who promote peace. Luke 10:6
The peace spoken of here is not peace such as between nations, but the peace within our hearts. For me peace is the ultimate goal, and without peace there can be no joy. I have found the more I seek God and the more He fills me with His love, the more at peace I become. And as a result, the more at peace I become, the more I am able to enjoy the things around me. “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and unrighteous. Matthew 5: 43-44
These verses that talk about loving your enemy always give me pause. I guess my human nature wants to rebel against such things as this. Read the rest of this entry »

Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the Lord. Psalm 31:24
The first five words of this verse leap out at me. Another way of saying them is, be encouraged and stand firm. When we hope in the Lord, isn’t that what we do? I suppose it can be said many different ways, but they all come back to the same thing—hope. Read the rest of this entry »
I’m Your Huckleberry ~ 9-21-11
I’ve had times in my life when I thought I’d finally “got it”; times when everything made sense and the way appeared clearly before me, only to suffer tremendous discouragement and disappointment. Read the rest of this entry »

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. Proverbs 3:5
There is so much truth and wisdom in this short verse. So many times, we are confused regarding what is going on around us, and we question why the Lord allows such things. Wicked men seem to flourish while good men suffer and perish; evil runs rampant, and good cannot be found. God seems not to be in charge. Read the rest of this entry »

Back in the early 1980’s, our church formed a softball team and joined a local league. We bought T-shirts and unfortunately, the pastor of the church and I chose the same number—three. I told him to leave his as it was, and I’d change mine. I did not want to buy a new shirt, so I came up with an idea. Read the rest of this entry »

And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with Him I am well pleased.” Matthew 3:17
I have heard men say God spoke to them, and I know in most cases, they are not saying they heard an actual voice, but that God inspired them through His word or some other influence. I can’t even imagine how it would be to hear the actual voice of God from the heavens. Read the rest of this entry »
