Daily Encouragement ~ 10/31

He shall say: “Hear, O Israel, today you are going into battle against your enemies. Do not be faint hearted or afraid; do not be terrified or give way to panic before them. For the Lord your God is the one who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies to give you victory.” Deuteronomy 20:3-4

Many times, I see these Old Testament verses as having a double meaning. The priest was talking about actual war and fighting, but it seems also to speak to us with relation to the daily battles we face here on earth—the war of simply surviving in a world gone crazy. God went with the Israelites into battle to assure them victory, and he is with us all day, every day, to assure us of victory as well. Read the rest of this entry »

Wax Candy Lips

Some of you young’ns won’t know what I’m talking about with regard to the title and first line, but those of you who grew up in the fifties and sixties definitely will. It’s another of the many poems I wrote in 1998, and my only Halloween poem. Read the rest of this entry »

Daily Encouragement ~ 10/30

“Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—for she loved much. But he who has been forgiven little loves little.”  Luke 7:47

I can surely relate to this concept, because I have been forgiven so much. I am in awe of a God that can forgive all I have done. Read the rest of this entry »

Daily Encouragement ~ 10/29

How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, “Your God reigns!”  Isaiah 52:7

In our temporal view, the first part of this verse seems at first odd. But as I read it again and then again, I began to realize it was probably written in a poetic way, describing the fact that to envision the messenger coming with the good news of peace and salvation was a beautiful sight. A Soft Knocking

I stumbled across a short story contest yesterday with a Halloween/horror theme, so I thought I’d give it a shot. I actually wrote the following story about ten years ago, and it was much longer than this version. The original was over 1700 words long, and even yesterday, when I set out to pare it down to the 500 word limit for the contest, I had my doubts I could do it. But I did, and hopefully it didn’t lose too much in the cutting process. In any case, I hope you enjoy it, and if you have time, go on over to Haley Whitehall’s blog and take a look at some of the other entries. Read the rest of this entry »

Daily Encouragement ~ 10/28

Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you.  Psalm 63:3

Nothing can equal the love of God. We can have everything this world has to offer, and still we will have nothing if we do not have God’s love in our hearts. I’ve been there. Read the rest of this entry »

Sup Wit Dat?

A few days ago, after reading our daily encouragements, Sherry and I were discussing “joy”; specifically, being filled with God’s joy. While we agreed that human beings can’t possibly be constantly joyful, we also agreed it was, most times, a choice we make. We can either choose to wallow in the despair of the moment, or rise above it and be joyful. Read the rest of this entry »

Daily Encouragement ~ 10/27

When a wicked man dies, his hope perishes; all he expected from his power comes to nothing. Proverbs 11:7

In essence, this verse is stating the age-old truth; you can’t take it with you. Read the rest of this entry »

My Very Own Angel

I always get irritated when stores start putting out Christmas decorations in October. I just don’t care for the commercialization of Christmas—all holidays, for that matter. It seems it’s all about money and profits these days, and we often lose sight of what we are celebrating.

Well, here I am jumping the gun and posting a Christmas story in October! It’s Bluebell Books’ fault! Their story prompt hit me this way, and I had no control over what came rushing out onto the page. Sorry!

(I hope you enjoy the story!) Read the rest of this entry »
