The Wonder of You

The theme for this week’s Gooseberry Garden Poetry Picnic is Feathers, Fidelity, Figment, and Fables, and the poem I am submitting fits none of those. Well, it might fall loosely within some of them, but nonetheless, it’s what I have to say this week. I hope you enjoy it.

The Wonder of You

The good book says

Whatever is true, noble and right

whatsoever is pure and lovely

dwell on these things

And so, I dwell on you

How can I ever be down

when you are at my side

Always there with a smile, a word

a touch

 or a loving gaze

I often wonder at how blessed I am

I wonder sometimes, why me

And then at times

I simply wonder

at the mere wonder of you

I often think on how it might have been

had we met when we were young

Would you have loved me then

as you do now

So completely and unselfishly

I praise God for you every day

No greater blessing could He give

No riches, no power, no…

No nothing

could equal the gift of you

You look at me sometimes

as though I am more than a man

And so this I promise

I’ll be your hero

but only… if you’ll be mine

I thank God everyday for the blessing of you . . . and it doesn’t matter when we met – just that we did. I love you.

    your wife is your heroine,

she is beautiful regardless her age or physical appearance,

    I like the whole piece.
relationship is mutual, you always return favors, which is cool.

    Swoon. 🙂

    • Oh my! I do believe this is the first “swoon” I have ever received for one of my poems! Thank you, Becky!

  5. Beautiful love poem, Charles! My husband pretends not to like poetry, so if I write him a poem, I save it for his birthday card!

    • I like how you say he “pretends” not to like poetry.
I write many of y poems for Sherry–birthday, Valentine’s, New Year, Just because. I think she likes poetry.
Thanks for the comments, Donna. I really like your poem about the old man!

  8. you Mom is great too,
    wow,
amazing to see such passion shared with a family of two generations.

    • Thanks! We tend to believe love is the answer. Not to say we’ve got it all figured out, but I think we’re headed in the right direction!

  11. Beautifully written, you touched my heart with this poem!

  12. I agree, it doesn’t matter when you met. The love we have as we age has a much deeper depth and wider understanding and is kinder and more compassionate and considerate than young love that is so often merely lust and not much more.
It’s so lovely to see love.
This is a wonderful piece straight from your heart, and, it shows.

Not only is she lucky to be loved like that but to a man who can write such beautiful poetry about his love for her. As always, your poetry makes me want to come back for more. hugs, pat

Well constructed love poem, though I’m not sure that the last line doesn’t take the edge off it! Still, thoroughly enjoyable.

    • I appreciate the comments, David. Funny you should mention the last line; I actually debated on it before posting this. The poem was actually written a while back, and the title was “I’ll Be Your Hero”. For some reason, I failed to date the poem, and only have a paper copy of the original. In any case, I decided to leave the last line as it is. I do agree with your assessment, however; it takes a bit of the edge off the total package.

    Hello Charles.
I’l have to agree with Sherry 100% on this one…doesn’t matter when or how you met as long as you both continue love, honor & respect each other.

Love knows no bounds, no time, no distance, no color, no creed. Love is the be all & the end all. When we’ve arrived at the end of our journey called life, love will still be blossoming strong, for it is never-ending & cannot die at the doorsteps of death.

    Wonderful expressions!
Thanks for sharing & for your gracious comments. I always look forward to hearing from you.
