One Day at a Time

This will be my last post for this year, as 2011 comes to a close, and we move into 2012. I look forward to the coming year with much hope and faith, but I readily admit there is uncertainty, as well. I know we’ll be okay, but I know, too, we must do our part and do our best, one day at a time. Happy New Year everyone!

One Day at a Time

As we walked this morning; the old dog and me

we traversed our familiar path in dense fog

The nearby trees and shrubs lining the sidewalk

were clear and vivid; the ones right next to us

But the further down the path I looked

the less clear they were, and at a point undetermined

they vanished into the gray mist

It came into my mind then that this was a fitting thing

for this the last day of the year two-thousand-eleven

For the only clear and certain thing is what is… today

Tomorrow, and the tomorrows of further days

hold shrouded mysteries we cannot foretell

with any solid degree of accuracy

Followed by the complete unknown

A realization came to me then, and I stopped

The dog not happy with this, looked up at me with

aged, nearly unseeing, eyes; then contentedly sniffed the grass

I turned and looked behind us; and found it to be the same

as what is before us; clear… then dimmer… then gray

The past, I realized, will slowly fade to gone

and the future will become clear as we move into it

One day at a time

And this is why we must make each “today” our best; not filled with sorrow over yesterday or worry over tomorrow.

Nuther good one Bro! Kinda scares me though that I’m starting to understand you. Tryin to figure out if I’m gettin wiser with age or just havin flashbacks from all those drugs I did as a yute. Anyhow, A Happy and Blessed New Year to you and Sherry! Cheers Ken

    • Maybe it’s just me being witty, but I can rule out the first choice with half my brain tied behind my back and my eyes closed. How long does it take for this stuff to kick in? Which reminds me; I was wondering the other day if you’re still in touch with Ski. I was wondering that because I’ve posted my story about stealing firewood four or five times and you ain’t remarked on it. Fact is, I think it’s all that fresh air you get flying above the beach on that kite thingy; probably healing your brain. Keep it up, you’ll be smart as me in another ooohhhh… Nah, that ain’t gonna happen.
Happy ALL Year to you, Jackie, Conner, & Taryn. (I probly spelled all those names wrong, huh?) Typos… I’m callin typos!

I liked the descriptions in this…found real talk in it; also liked the pace and the bit of witty-ness when the dog stopped : )

  6. I was thinking along the same lines when I posted my thoughts…yours are so much more clear and precise…thank you for sharing them.

May 2012 be your best year ever.

    Hello Charles. Happy New Year!
I am one who does not make New Year’s resolutions. I am grateful for another year of life & good health. Anything else on top of that is an added bonus. My 2011 has also had its share of trials & tribulations, but I have taken them in stride. There were times I faltered, took different directions, but I was never completely down nor was I lost. My motto has always been not to worry about the past…we can’t change what has already passed & we can’t fret over tomorrow if we don’t know what it will bring. Live for today as if it is your last & embrace life, because it can be cut short in an instant. My wife says this is why I’m always a happy man…she’s right of course!

    Wise reflection in this one.
Thanks for sharing. Thanks also for your visits throughout this past year. I’ve come to relish your comments (smile).

Wishing you & your family a wonderful year. May it be filled with lots of happiness, laughter & of course an abundance of love!

  11. Oh, this is lovely. It is indeed best to leave the past and walk on ahead into what will be, hoping that we’ve learned our lesson and continue onward without repeating too many of the same mistakes.

A good metaphor, Charles, this thought of the clarity of the path being only visible where we are. It bears some pondering! I’m thinking about time these days, and I can see that coming into a novel somehow. Hmm. Thanks for dropping by http://www.shawnbird.com/begin and leaving a comment. It’s always nice to know who visits. 🙂

    • Oh, yes, Shawn. Time; the now, the then, the future; always good food for a novel. I’m reading King’s new one now, about traveling into the past. Fascinating story! I can see a time-travel novel about a person going back and forth between the future and past, always changing things in the past, but never satisfied with how it works out in the future, the end result being they never live in the present, where all the good stuff is. say… now I’m saying, Hmmm.
Yes it is nice to know who visits, and getting great comments like yours is very nice, too! Thank you!
