Daily Encouragement ~ 1/25

Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill. Matthew 5:17

I have to admit, I have always been a bit confused by this verse and the three that follow it. Then I realized that as Jesus was going about teaching, there were many—especially the Scribes and Pharisees who were not happy with what He was saying to the people. They had had things their way for a long time, and now this guy—Jesus—was stepping on their toes.

In this part of His sermon on the mount, Jesus was letting people know that, yes, the law—the commandments of God—would still need to be obeyed, but they would be obeyed according to the word of God, not the words of men.

It surprises me—I guess it shouldn’t—that even then men were trying to distort and twist the word of God to fit their own interpretations and agendas. Jesus said He was there to change all that, and from now on the way to the Father was through Him, not by means of man’s doctrine.

My encouragement to you is to not get tangled up in the dos and don’ts of religion. Seek God. He already knows where you are, and is waiting patiently for you to turn to Him. When you allow Him to fill you with His love and Spirit, you will be amazed to find out His commandments are easy to understand and follow.

So true Charles. Now we have a righteousness that is the by product of faith. It is a righteousness that even exceeds the old law but it is doable because the Spirit helps us to walk in it as we trust Him! Thanks for the reminder!

    • Thank you jelillie! I’m so glad these simple words of mine are an encourgement to you. You’re visits and comments are certainly an encouragement and blessing to me!

It’s so sad that there are so many false teachers out there who distort God’s truth. I found that the only way to make sure I stay headed in the right direction is to put my focus on Jesus and ignore all the junk the world, family members and friends like to throw at me. I take my eyes of the world and instead I put in on the best prize of all, Jesus Christ. What do I need with the world, when I have Him?

    • Absolutely! And I firmly believe that’s what we have to do–keep it personal between us and the Lord.
