Daily Encouragement ~ 1/28

Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths: But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God’s throne: Matthew 5: 33-34

In verses 33 through 37 of Matthew, Jesus addresses swearing, not in the sense of cursing, but in the sense of proclaiming the truth of something by swearing on the name of God or some other thing. I think verse 34 holds the key to the entire discussion and constant debate of the subject  when Jesus says; Swear not at all.

I think all Jesus is trying to say is; keep it simple, tell the truth and act in an honorable fashion.

In verse 37, He seems to say just that; But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay nay.

I think the scribes and Pharisees had once again taken things and twisted them around to their own devices, and Jesus was taking them back to the basics. The last part of verse 37 seems to bring that point home, and my translation of it is, keep it simple; say what you mean, and mean what you say, but don’t muddle it up with a lot of unnecessary details.

Keep it simple, is the hardest thing to do. One tends to ramble and rant to be seen and be counted. We seek our own little ways of getting noticed apparently!

    • Funny, isn’t it? You would think that keeping things simple would make it easier, but you are right, it seems to be more difficult for some odd reason. Being noticed… yes, I suppose you’re right there, too. It seems that is the motive for many things we do. I liked to be noticed; for the good things! When I mess up, I always hope no one is watching!
Thanks for the visit and comment, Hank. I appreciate them, and they encourage me!

Amen! Another awesome one Charles! I loved it and that’s so important in today’s world, telling the truth that is. It seems that we’re taking after our politicians of late; twist the truth around or better still lie outright. God never lied to us, Jesus told the truth outright and if it wasn’t understood it was because sin was blinding them to the truth of His words.
It would be a much better world if we spent more time on truth and less, much less on twisting things for convenience’s sake.

    • I like to say the truth stands alone. In other words, you never have to back it up. If it’s true, there’s nothing to explain; it will show itself to be fact.
