Daily Encouragement ~ 1/29

Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. Matthew 5:38-39

Verse 38 through 42 of Matthew have been distorted and misused since the day they were written, but my understanding of Jesus and His purpose on this earth are simple.

These verses and the three that follow them do not tell us that as Christians we should let others walk all over us. They simply tell us we shouldn’t fight violence with violence. Most of the things Jesus says here are not meant to be taken literally. If someone smacks you upside the head, you should not just stand there and let him whack you on the other side of your head. You should defend yourself, or get outta Dodge!

And in the following verses where money and possessions are the topic, Jesus is not telling us to give all our possessions and money away to anyone and everyone who asks for, or tries to take, them. He is simply telling us to be generous to all in accordance with our ability to do so.

Being a child of God does not make us punching bags, or banks!
