Part seventeen: Something Down the Road

Lilly laughed then resumed walking. Ben and I tagged along a few steps behind her for a short distance, then jogged to catch up with her.

Ben was as excited as I’d seen him since he’d joined up with us. “You think the animals are like in another dimension?” He skipped ahead and began walking backward, a few steps ahead of Lilly and I, his eyes sparkling with curiosity. “Like Stephen King stuff?”

“You read Stephen King?” I asked him, incredulity apparent in my tone.

“Since I was eight!” Ben said. “I read the gunslinger series twice! I love Stephen King. He’s a genius!”

I stole a quick glance at Lilly—she appeared to be only half listening to our conversation, looking past Ben at something down the road.

“You read The Dome?” Ben asked, looking from me to Lilly, then turning around, obviously curious about what Lilly was staring so intently at. He stopped abruptly, and I nearly walked right into him. I put a hand on his shoulder and followed the direction of his gaze. The hair stood up on the back of my neck, and I heard Lilly say, “Oh, dear.”

I looked to my right then left; wide open pasture was all I could see for as far as I could see. There was nowhere to run, and nowhere to hide.

Ben said, “Are those…”

Lilly shushed him.

Okay, now my skin is crawling! I almost screamed and kept looking over my shoulder. This chapter was even scarier and once again you stopped as I was screaming, “What? What? What’s up ahead Charles!?!?” You probably knew we were all doing this and squealing because you stopped right at that point. LOL!!
Good job at grabbing us and keeping us focused on this awesome chapter. Be blessed and write more. LOL!!

    • Yes! I love this short little chapter, and here’s the kicker; I haven’t decided what’s there! That might sound strange, but that’s how I write; the story comes to me like a movie playing in my mind, and I just write down what I see. So! We will see what it is they see!
