Daily Encouragement ~ 3/14

Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. Matthew 10:34

This statement by Jesus can be confusing; we tend to think Jesus is the Lord of peace—and that is correct. The problem is, not all men will believe Jesus is the Son of God. Jesus knew some would follow Satan, and thus there would not be peace among men. But, there can be peace within men who believe He is the Son of God!

The only way there will be peace among all men is if all men believe in Jesus and turn to God. Unfortunately, this is not likely to take place any time soon. In fact, Jesus goes on to say in the remaining verses of this chapter of Matthew that our family—our sons and daughters, even—may turn away from God, causing division in our households.

Division is what is meant by the “sword”. The word of God will not be understood and accepted by all, and when it is rejected, those who reject it—and God—will be separated from us. This is quite evident in our world today.

In spite of this division, we can be at peace. When we focus on God and the good things of this world, forsaking all for Him, He will fill us with a peace that defies the logic of man. Call me crazy, but I know it’s true; I’m living it!

  1. The peace of God passes all understanding in Christ Jesus …Darrell

  2. Charles, This is an wonderful explanation of this verse! And I know exactly what you mean about having peace through Jesus, because I’m living it, too. 🙂 Peace, Linda

P.S. I had to smile as I “signed” this – I always sign comments “Peace, Linda” but it seemed particularly appropriate for this post.

    • Thank you, Linda. I’m glad you like my take on this verse. I make no claim to being a Biblical scholar, and I merely write what I see in each verse I write about. I try to keep it simple–for me, as much as those who read it–and hope what I have to say encourages the reader.
      Peace!

Peace within . . . isn’t that what we all want?

Peace…I like this one. Also, “Division is what is meant by the “sword”. The word of God will not be understood and accepted by all, and when it is rejected, those who reject it—and God—will be separated from us. This is quite evident in our world today” is so true and sad.
