It’s How We Were Raised!
Things, money, and possessions are good!
Such is the destiny of all who forget God: so perishes the hope of the Godless. What he trusts in is fragile; what he relies on is a spider’s web. Job 8:13-14
The book of Job may be worthy of an entire book of devotionals. Surely its story is one we can all relate to.
The thing that jumps out of this verse is the simple truth that worldly things are fragile and of no value, while God and His love for us is priceless. There is nothing on this earth that will be of lasting value—not gold, not jewels, not money or land. God’s love is the only treasure we should seek.
I wrestle with the concept of earthly values almost daily. I find myself striving for the things of this world, almost without thinking about it. It’s how we are raised, how we are taught and it’s fed to us in large doses at almost every turn. Things, money, and possessions are good and what we should want! The radio, TV and signs along the highway all encourage us to want THINGS!
And then…. when we have all these things, we feel a need to protect them and value them. And we store them in a fragile web—a web so easily destroyed while we are away from it.
God and His love for us will not be destroyed—even while we are away from Him—as long as we do not forget Him.
Love Him.
