Tooting Your Own Horn ~ October 31

Tooting Your Own Horn

Might cause you to blow it

Do you see a man wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than him. Proverbs 26:12

That seems pretty harsh! But I get the point, and I have definitely been guilty of thinking I had something all figured out, only to find out I wasn’t nearly as smart as I thought I was. I guess at those times I fell into the fool category.

I try to stay out of that column as much as I can, but it’s fairly easy to slip back into it. Too often, we have a few successes or victories—things seem to be going our way—and we get cocky. That’s when we usually make a mistake or something comes along we hadn’t thought of and deals us a dose of hard reality. Sometimes the experience can be quite humbling and often painful.

I think these interruptions are sometimes God’s way of keeping us humble. I also think it’s one of the ways we learn to stay focused on Him. If we are focused on loving God and giving Him the glory in all things, we won’t be taking the credit for our successes and victories; we’ll be giving the credit to Him. In doing that, I think we will be wise in the only eyes that matter—God’s.
