Many times, while commenting on another blogger’s post, or on a Facebook post, I wind up writing a poem or story. I did so this morning, as I commented on my friend Pat’s article. I took the comment to his piece and tweaked it a bit, and the following poem was created. I hope you enJOY it! (Thanks for the inspiration, Bro Pat!)
Because It’s With Him
More and more, I imagine Jesus
My best friend and confidant
He grins at me when I mess up
Gives me a little chuck on the shoulder
And says, It’s cool, you’re getting there
He puts His arm around me
And I am filled with joy
Joy I cannot contain
And when I get it right
A rare thing with this old sinner
But happening more often these days
He gives me the ol’ high-five
Points to our Father above and shouts
You da man, Charlie!
Kind of like a touchdown dance
But much much more fun
Because… it’s with Him

I am not a Christian — though I was a fervent one at one time.
Last night I was at a close friend’s house. He is a Hindu and while we were sharing time at his house together chatting just last night, he said, “I know you don’t believe in God, but you are a very moral man.” [His daughter and mine were on a team I coach and he has seen me face some injustices.] It was his way of saying, “I don’t care about your belief, we are brothers” — the best he could because he is a very sincere follower of Lord Krishna who is Ishwara (‘God’) incarnate for many Hindus. And your poem reminds me of how he talks about his Lord. Now his Lord has no father, was not sacrificed and has many things unshared with Jesus, but the heart-felt comfort of a personal relationship with God is just like yours. This poem reminded me of it.

Such joy, such love – I have always believed this is how Christian faith is meant to be…
charlesmashburn said
It is how it’s supposed to be!
Thanks, Tony!

Which begs the question, why do so many people work so hard to make it otherwise?
charlesmashburn said
That is a very good question, Tony, and one I cannot begin to answer in the space provided on this blog. And besides, anything I could say would be merely my opinion. I will say only that we are all products of our surroundings, and if we surround ourselves with the good things of God, we will be filled with His spirit and partake more fully of His grace. Too many have been taught that He is a judging God, and so they judge because they are judged. He is not. He is a loving God, and therefore I strongly believe we must love because we are loved. The amazing thing is, if we focus on His love for us, He will instill in us the ability to love as He does.
Thanks for reading and commenting, Tony. I appreciate it!
