I Don’t Have to Love You ~ June 19

I Don’t Have to Love You

I want to!

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so no one can boast. Ephesians 2:8-9

This is where a lot of folks get confused when it comes to the “how” of being a Christian. Many of us have been taught we have to do certain things to gain and keep our salvation. We don’t have to do anything. When God calls us to Him, and we begin to focus on Him, He will instill in us the desire to do His will.

I can offer a good earthly example: I love my wife, Sherry, very much. I do many things to make her life easier and to make her happy. I don’t do so because I have to—there are no rules or requirements—I do so because I love her and want her life to be as good as it can be.

And that’s how God loves us! He loves us so much and so unconditionally, He gives us the best of his world; peace, joy, hope and blessings so numerous we can’t begin to count them. I sometimes wonder why God chose me and gifted me with grace and salvation. I certainly did nothing to earn His love. I guess that’s why He calls it grace; it’s a gift of love.
