When the Going Gets Tough ~ August 11

When the Going Gets Tough

Will we remain true?

Strengthening the disciples and encouraging them to remain true to the faith. “We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God,” they said. Acts 14:22

In the city of Lystra, the people became so enraged at Paul and his preaching of the gospel they stoned him. Then, thinking he was dead, they dragged him outside the city. Wow! I guess you didn’t want to have a difference of opinion with folks back in those days!

The amazing thing is the way Paul took this in stride, basically telling the disciples this was the way things would be if they served the Lord. Again I say, Wow!

What if the preacher at your church greets you at the door Sunday morning, beaten and bruised? You hear someone whisper, “He was beaten by people who don’t believe in God the way we do.” And when you shake his hand—the one not in a cast—he smiles, revealing a missing front tooth and says, “It’s okay, we must endure hardships in order to enter the kingdom of God.”

I’m thinking there might be some empty seats in the auditorium if this was the case. We all suffer hardships from time to time, but most are not a result of our belief in God. How much are we willing and prepared to endure? How many of us are ready to remain true to the faith if things get really rough?
