Don’t Love Because You Have To

Love because you want to!

For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5:20

The Pharisees were frauds. They believed they could do their way to righteousness, and thought they obeyed all the laws and taught people to do things the way they did, they’d be rewarded with good seats in heaven. But they left out the most important thing—loving God.

The Pharisees were “look-at-me’s”. They did all the right things, but for all the wrong reasons. They obeyed the law so they could get to heaven, not because they loved God, and it doesn’t work that way.

That would be like one of us going to another person and saying, “Here’s the deal: I’ll be the best spouse you could want; I’ll do everything just the way you want it done; I’ll do all the cooking, cleaning, and I’ll work two—even three—jobs, to make sure you have everything your heart desires. But I won’t love you.” I don’t know about you, but I’d have to turn that deal down.

We should love God, not because He requires us to, but because we want to.
