The Face of Gentleness ~ October 17

The Face of Gentleness

I’ve seen it

But the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control. Against such things there is no law. Galatians 5:22-23

Gentleness evokes an image of a person with a kindly smile and easy going manner; one who is soft spoken, encouraging, and kind. I can think of many who fit this description, but the face that rushes to mind is that of my grandpa. He was a strong, hard-working man, but in his eyes and his grin, I saw gentleness and love. And there it is; it seems, when we talk about the attributes of God, it always comes back to love.

In all honesty, I didn’t know my grandfather, “Bunk” Stringer, all that well and the reality of it is I only knew the best parts of him. What I do know is he was full of love for his family, and throughout his life, he made us laugh and smile, and taught us to be good people.

We—his grandchildren—called him “Pa”, and his friends called him Bunk. And if ever a man has passed through my life about who I can truly say, “I want to be like him,” it’s my grandpa. If I were to paint a picture of what I perceive to be the face of God, it would look much like Luther Benjamin “Bunk” Stringer, and He would have the most beautiful, gentle smile upon His face.
