To Hug, or Not To Hug ~ November 6

To Hug, or Not To Hug

It’s a judgment call

And a time to refrain. Ecclesiastes 3:5

I am tempted to say there is no bad time for an embrace, but common sense and experience tells me that’s not true. There are times when a person wants to be left alone, and I’ve found it best to accommodate them. Sometimes, a person needs to sort things out in their own mind, in their own way, and another person’s kindness only confuses and delays their sorting through the situation.

We all have our own way of dealing with life and the situations it presents to us. Some, in times of sorrow, need a shoulder to cry on, while others would rather bear the pain in quiet solitude. A wise friend is one who knows when to refrain from that embrace, and when a hug is exactly what is needed. Every person is different, and every situation is different. We should always assess the problem before we attempt to solve it.

Most times, it’s obvious when a hug or embrace is needed and/or desired, but the opposite is usually true as well. Sometimes just being there is the embrace a person needs; sometimes not being there is just as helpful. Everyone needs a little space now and then.

To hug, or not to hug; it’s a judgment call.
