You’re Okay, They’re Okay! ~ January 7

You’re okay, they’re okay!

Don’t Compare Yourself To Others

Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, to be content. Philippians 4:11

It is not in our nature to be content with our current state, and it wasn’t in Paul’s nature. Notice he says, “I have learned.” Salvation does not automatically make us patient or content, but it offers those things and all God’s gifts if we simply give ourselves to Him and allow Him to teach us His ways.

I have learned salvation is not a collective event, it is a one-on-one event between each individual and God; salvation is individual. Likewise, learning about God and His ways is an individual endeavor. Certainly, it’s okay to learn as a group, but each person must progress at their own pace within their own ability to comprehend and understand.

A line from the famous poem, Desiderata, says it well, when it states, “If you compare yourself with others you may become vain and bitter, for there will always be greater and lesser persons than yourself.”

Be content with who you are and where you are as you allow God to teach you His ways.
