Those Were the Days, My Friend
We wished they’d never end
For all our days are passed away in your wrath: we spend our years as a tale that is told. Psalms 90:9
Those were the days, my friend
We thought they’d never end
We’d sing and dance forever and a day
We’d live the life we choose
We’d fight and never lose
Those were the days
Oh, yes, those were the days
Many of us—both young and old—can relate to the chorus of the song above, Those Were the Days, My Friend. We look back on a time in our lives when we felt we had the world by the tail and were invincible. I remember times like those, and actually, I feel I’m living in those times right now.
Back in my youth, I had some good times and did indeed feel as though I were invincible. The problem with those days is I felt that way for all the wrong reasons, and usually suffered the consequences of my wayward ways. The life I chose during those times was typically not one that would lead to peace and everlasting joy. I inevitably found myself neither singing or dancing, and lying in the proverbial gutter after a thorough butt-kicking.
We can sing and dance today, and know we’ll never lose. Not because we’re invincible or strong, but because God has control of our lives, and it’s for Him we dance and sing.
Oh, yes, these are the days my friend. And, indeed, they will never end!
