It Sounds Good
And it’s true, too!
I desire to do your will, my God; your law is within my heart.” Psalm 40:8
I’m reminded of the scene from the movie, The Jerk, where Nathan has lost everything, and as he prepares to leave his home, he starts gathering, one-by-one, little things he just can’t imagine living without; an ashtray, a chair, a lamp, a paddle game, and, well, you get the picture.
We complicate our lives and add to our load by thinking we need things we don’t necessarily need. This doesn’t apply to just possessions, either. We are often the same when we’re attempting to live a godly life, in that we tend to pile do’s and don’ts upon ourselves that aren’t necessary. Jesus didn’t say His yoke is easy and His burden is light just because it sounded good in the context of the sermon He was delivering; He said it because it is fact.
Jesus died for us, not so we would carry his commands upon our shoulders, but so He could place them in our hearts. He doesn’t want us to try and learn His ways, He wants us to allow Him to instill His ways within us. We will never be righteous of our own accord or actions, because His righteousness is a gift, not a wage we can earn.
