Let’s Talk About Ducks

I’m headed to Phoenix this morning for a class reunion, so let’s talk about ducks… and heat indexes.

If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it’s probably a duck. The saying is commonly used to counter arguments that something is not what it appears to be. So what’s up with the “heat index”?

The weather report this morning reads: Temperature 81°, humidity 77%, feels like 86°. What’s up with that “feels

like”? If it feels like 86°, isn’t it 86°? If you pick up a duck that just waddled out of the pond, can you say, “This is a duck, but it feels like a frog, because it’s wet.” But… is it a frog?

No! It’s a duck! You can say it’s a wet duck, but you can’t say it’s a frog.

So! I say if it feels like 86° then, by golly, it’s 86°.

Are we clear and sunny on this? Or… are we partly cloudy?
