The shepherd’s rod and staff are symbolic in that the shepherd used his in many ways to tend his flock; directing them, pushing forward those that fell behind, and fetching back those that went astray. He also used it to drive away predators, protecting the flock.
God’s word is His rod and His promises and protections are His staff. When, by faith in Him, we place
ourselves under His watchful, loving care, we can abide peacefully in the green pastures alongside the still waters, knowing He is ever with us.
Fear is the absolute opposite of faith; if our faith is strong, we will fear nothing—not even death. Our Shepherd watches over us with complete love and care. When our faith is in Him, we can truly live without fear.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for you are with me; your rod and your staff they comfort me. Psalms 23:4
