We all have emotions and, too often, we try to keep them hidden from others. When we do that, we are, in effect, focusing on the cause of those negative emotions and allowing the situation to cause us harm. The good news is, this can be true of good feelings as well as bad.
When I realized the way to control my temper was to stop focusing on what was angering me, it became easier to do. The key is to let go and let God. Instead of focusing on the problems and bad things of this world and getting angry about them, we should focus on God and good things.
Focus on His world, instead of this world. They are, to coin a phrase… worlds apart.
Be not hasty in your spirit to be angry: for anger rests in the bosom of fools. Ecclesiastes 7:9
