For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. Matthew 6:21
We’ve been convinced our happiness has to do with how much stuff we have, and how good our stuff is. We have been literally brainwashed into thinking the car we drive or the size TV we watch are the important things in life. It just ain’t so!
Because of these misconceptions, many people shy away from God, thinking in order to live a godly life they will have to give up all their stuff! That’s not what Jesus is saying at all. He’s simply saying we should get our priorities straight; we should love God, not the things God gives us. All the things we have aren’t really ours anyway; everything comes from, and belongs to, God; He just allows us to use it.
God doesn’t want us to give up the good things of this world; He wants us to enjoy life. All He asks is we love Him more than we love our stuff. Which, by the way, shouldn’t be difficult; God loves us unconditionally, and I’m pretty sure our stuff doesn’t care about us at all!
