Pennies From Heaven

This is an oldie, but a goodie, and gets me about as close to being famous as I will probably ever be. I wrote this little poem in 1998, in honor of my grandfather, Luther “Bunk” Stringer’s passing, and it has since been all over the world via the Internet. You will find it on many web sites, and I get it in an email every year or so; usually from someone who doesn’t know I wrote it. Some of you have seen it on this blog before, and perhaps some have seen it other places. In any case, I hope you enjoy it. Read the rest of this entry »

My Very Own Angel

I always get irritated when stores start putting out Christmas decorations in October. I just don’t care for the commercialization of Christmas—all holidays, for that matter. It seems it’s all about money and profits these days, and we often lose sight of what we are celebrating.

Well, here I am jumping the gun and posting a Christmas story in October! It’s Bluebell Books’ fault! Their story prompt hit me this way, and I had no control over what came rushing out onto the page. Sorry!

(I hope you enjoy the story!) Read the rest of this entry »

Daily Encouragement ~ 8/16

August 16

Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. Colossians 3:2

When people read this verse and others similar to it, they usually think of earthly things as being things like possessions and money. The fact is, in this particular instance, I don’t think Paul is referring to possessions at all; I think he’s referring to earthly rules and rituals. Read the rest of this entry »

Daily Encouragement ~ 8/15

Since you died with Christ to the basic principles of this world, why, as though you still belong to it, do you submit to its rules: Colossians 2:20

When we accept Jesus as our savior, we turn from the things of this world to follow Him, and yet, we want to hang on to some of the worldly things; often thinking they are godly things and we must continue to do them. This is where I think we are missing the boat. Jesus died to free us of those worldly principles so we could concentrate on the one thing that matters—loving Him and God. Daily Encouragement ~ 8/14

Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. Colossians 2:16

I used to wonder what good it did to read the Old Testament. It seemed to me that with the new covenant in place after Jesus died then rose again, the Old Testament was of little use. I have since determined it is very useful in that it tells the history of God’s people who foretold the coming of Christ, and it is also filled with many principles which are good to live by. Daily Encouragement ~ 8/13

August 13

No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.

I’ve touched on this premise before, but what I believe this verse says is that when we totally give ourselves to God and He lives in us and loves others through us, we have become an extension of Him. It seems to me to give substance to God’s omnipotence, in that when we become one with Him—an extension and true representative of Him—we are His eyes, His ears, and most of all, His heart. Daily Encouragement ~ 8/12

August 12

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men. Colossians 3:23

This has always been one of my favorite verses. I have always had a rebellious nature, and it made it difficult to work for other people; especially when the people above me were unfair, or otherwise not pleasant. Even when I was not paying as much attention to God as I should have been, this verse helped me during the times I was under those less-than-optimum supervisors. Read the rest of this entry »

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path. Psalm 119:105

This is how we know we’re on the path God would have us travel—by the light He sheds on it. Read the rest of this entry »

Daily Encouragement ~ 8/10

I will hasten and not delay to obey your commands. Psalm 119: 60

            I’m still in training!

I’m reminded of baseball practice when I was in high school. The coach would have us do the same simple drills over and over, trying to make the action he was teaching us an automatic reflex. Read the rest of this entry »

Daily Encouragement ~ 8/9

August 9

I have considered my ways and have turned my steps to your statutes. I will hasten and not delay to obey your commands. Psalm 119: 59

Actually, I didn’t do a lot of soul searching or considering before turning my steps to God’s statutes. It was more along the lines of Him gently turning me and pointing me in the direction He wanted me to go. To be honest, I didn’t even realize I was on the path He’d put me on until I was down the trail a ways. Read the rest of this entry »
