A Pretty Sweet Deal

When my book of daily encouragements, Be Still, came out, my publisher encouraged me to do the whole advertising, book signings, etc., thing, and I did so with great expectations. Visions of grandeur danced in my head, as I bounced merrily on the springboard of what I perceived to be success, fame and fortune.

sweet dealUnfortunately, no one had filled the proverbial pool, and I hit bottom hard and quick. It was painful, but then, gradually, God began to remind me of something I’d lost sight of. I heard His voice–a loving whisper–telling me, “It’s not about you, Charlie.”

No, it’s not about me, it’s about God, it’s about each one of you, and it’s about each and every person I come in contact with for the rest of my days.

April Fools, Little Brother!

As many of you know, I take great delight in making people laugh. What most of you don’t know is there was a time when I considered this day–April 1st–a National Holiday. Yes, April Fool’s Day, when I was in my jokester prime, was my favorite day of the year. Just ask my little brother… Read the rest of this entry »

Go Check It Out, Richard

When I was a teenager, we used to hunt rabbits at night sometimes. We’d go out to where a farm road ran between an alfalfa field and the desert, and the rabbits would be thick, going in and out partaking of the alfalfa field buffet. It was a pretty sweet deal for the rabbits, except for the part about us shooting them. Read the rest of this entry »

We Made A Big Splash!

It’s been so long since we’ve had any rain, this story seems like science fiction, but the rain will come, and this story is true. I know times are rough out in Spicewood right now, what with the wildfires and all, so I hope this little tail can make folks out there smile for a moment. Read the rest of this entry »

Killin’ Time!

Another story from my logging days has been stuck in my head all these years. The hook tender on this occasion was a guy who’d been dubbed, “Killer.” He was about five-foot-six, and weighed probably two hundred pounds, and most of those pounds were rock-hard muscle. He was known throughout the Mt. Rainier area as a street-fighter you didn’t want to tangle with. Naturally, none of us on the crew gave him any lip. Read the rest of this entry »

A Striking Example

I like to write about the good-old-days, but sometimes the good-old-days were not so good. This poem is the story of the first day of class–fifth grade–and a stern teacher, who wanted to get his point across the best way he could think of. To a nine-year-old boy, things weren’t that complicated; you thought, you acted, you paid the price. Such was life in the good-old-days. Also submitted this to Jinge Poetry’s “Poetry Potluck” this week. Their theme included sorrow, and this was pretty sorrowful back when it happened! Read the rest of this entry »

Hello! My name is Charlie

As a belated Memorial Day tribute, I’d like to tell you a story about Sherry’s father, James King. He passed away last year, and he is truly missed. He was a veteran, and very proud of that fact; he was also one of the most loving fathers and grandfathers I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. From what I saw, his entire life was centered on his family. I respected and admired him very much. Read the rest of this entry »
