Love Is All We Need

minion guitarSongs have always moved me; some in a positive way, others just the opposite. Lines from songs have struck me as genius, some as profound, and some as simple truth. Interestingly, it took years for the truth of those lines to truly mean anything to me, and I too often wish I’d seen the wisdom in the words before I reached this age of… maturity. Yes, I admit, I wish I’d known then what I know now. I should have listened to the music.

Now… where I began is far behind me. I can’t even remember some of the roads I traveled, and I wonder how life might’ve been if I’d lived it all without fear.

We all do it. We scratch and claw our way to what we’re told is success, which translates to security, and then cling to it as if it can keep us safe from all harm, only to realize the light we obeyed for most of our years was the one in the middle; the yellow one. Oh sure, we often ignored and sped through it, telling ourselves if we stopped the guy behind us my plow into us. And so, we lived, caution being another word for fear. Green being just as frightening, and the red one to be avoided at all cost, because slowing down was bad enough, but stopping meant you’d given up, allowing something, someone, to take control.

But… what if we’d lived like we were dying? Would the knowledge our time was limited have caused us to throw caution to the wind? Would yellow have been meaningless, and red nothing more than a dare? How fast and how far would we have gone? Maybe not far. But we would have lived like there was no tomorrow. Or… like there was, and it counted. Counted, because it would give us more time to love, which, I’ve realized, perhaps too late, is what living is all about. Love is indeed, all we need.

It Seems to Me

cloudy morning quote

No matter what our troubles might be, no matter our worry or strife, Jesus will give us peace, and all we must do is love Him and trust Him. Most of the time, we trust Him with the little problems, but when a large one comes along, we tend to dive right into despair and worry. Then when we realize He’s our only hope, we turn to Him and cry out for His help.

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28

Slip Sliding Away

mount-hood-moonYears ago, while driving from Tacoma to Phoenix on a cold, clear winter night, I was passing Mount Hood, as a full moon rose over the mountain’s peak. I gazed out the driver’s-side window, awed by the spectacle, and as I basked in the beauty of it something suddenly dawned on me; I was looking at the mountain and moon through the windshield of my pickup.

Unknowingly, while gawking at the awesome scene, I’d come upon a patch of black ice, and was spinning out of control counterclockwise.

There I was, believing I was gliding down the highway, and suddenly—due to not focusing on what was important—I found myself slip sliding away.

At times, when we fail to stay focused on God, we will be distracted by things of this world, and suddenly realize we’re going the wrong direction, out of control, and headed for trouble.

Miraculously, without any action by me, the pickup went full circle and was facing the right direction just as I reached the end of the patch of ice.

I pulled over at the next roadside rest area and attempted to calm my nerves. I even tried to sleep, but my eyes were stuck wide-open, so after I stopped shaking, I continued my journey.

I press on toward the goal for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:14

Peace Amid the Chaos

Sometimes it seems, based on what we read, hear, and see, the world is reeling in a chaotic time like we have never seen before. It often appears the world we live in is virtually on fire with hate and greed, and its foundations are crumbling beneath our feet.

It’s one thing to be informed, but it’s another to focus on all the bad things going on around us. I firmly believe we must focus on the good, for to focus on the bad will lead to despair and madness.

peace within

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Philippians 8:4
