If there were no night and day
No darkness and light
Only a constant of one or the other
… or something in between
If there were no top and bottom
No rich and poor
Only a constant of one or the other
… or something in between
If there were no good and evil
No right and wrong
Only a constant of one or the other
… or something in between
If there were no love and hate
Only a constant of one or the other
… or something in between
If there were no joy and sadness
Only a constant of one or the other
… or something in between
If all these things were so
There would be no time or fate
No emotions or feelings
No wants or desires
No choices or mistakes
Nothing to fear and nothing to hide
Everything and everyone would be… equal

The timer beneath the corner table just turned off the light.
It rained all through the night, and even though the blinds are up and the window open to let in the fresh cool air, the heavy clouds hanging low above the city make the keyboard hard for my old eyes to see. And yet, I am compelled by… well… actually, I don’t know why I brought up this blank page and began to speak onto it. My mind—as old (it seems older) as my eyes—keeps wondering why I’m doing it. It’s not like I have
anything important to share.
It seems this is how I reflect on things, and I often stop as quickly as I start, realizing I have nothing to say—to me, or anyone else. But once in a while—a great while—something comes out of the thoughts that flit about and then hide. And so I let my mind and fingers ramble, wondering as I do if something of substance and meaning might dart from the recesses and grab someone by the soul?
I keep thinking about the timer… and the light.

With Halloween less than a week away; do you fear the night, the dark? This is the prompt offered by guest host, Mark, for Kellie Elmore’s Free Write Friday. It struck a chord with me, and the following frightening tune is what came forth. Enjoy! Read the rest of this entry »

Though it may seem a lie, I am not obsessed with death. It is a season we must too often witness and one day endure, but until it is our earthly end, I believe we should turn away from it, ever marching toward the good light through this dark and sometimes dreary world. My hope is that in the words I share, you will find the light–the light that sorrow often dims. My wish is that I might blaze a trail to help us all find the peace and comfort that is ours should we but receive it. My want is merely to love and be loved as I walk this earth with you. This is something new for me. I don’t often write poems of a religious nature, but as I read today’s “Daily Encouragement”, I saw a poem in it. So if you read the encouragement this morning, this will sound very familiar. You can also listen to me read this one if you’d like to.
