What God Wants Most

God is no longer a God of rules and regulations; He is a God of grace and love. In the days before Jesus, salvation was something one had to earn. When Jesus died for our sins, salvation was provided to us by grace. Grace is a gift, and when we accept it, we will live a godly life as a result of it. We will obey God’s commands because, by grace, it is in our hearts and nature to do so, not because we must do so to please Him.

I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing? Galatians 2:21

Daily Encouragement

January 23

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God. Matthew 5:9

This Gospel is called the Gospel of Peace because it tends to reconcile men to God and to each other. I believe if we are to be peacemakers, we must seek God’s wisdom and heart. All these verses—often referred to as the beatitudes—seem to point us to this very thing, the wisdom that comes from knowing and loving God. This is—in my mind—the center of our lives and where God desires us to be: in Him, Him in us, loved, and being love.

Most of us are contentious by nature; we tend to want things to be how we want them to be and have little understanding or compassion for those who want things to be any other way. The phrase “live and let live” may leave our lips, but it is often followed by (muttered softly or by mere thought), “but don’t mess with my world.” We are—I think—not only contentious, but also selfish.

The answer: Love God. Focus, not on our desires or the desires of others, but on God and what he desires. In Matthew 6:33, Jesus says, “But seek first his Kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”  I think the emphasis in those words should be on the word “all”. I think when we seek God, He will make us all He intends us to be. We will become peacemakers, not because we desire peace, but because He desires it.

Seek Him. Love Him. Become a peacemaker by being filled with His peace.
