The golf course in our community isn’t a bad course, but it certainly isn’t a good one. Due to some past management problems, the course has kinda gone to pot. Actually, the course “was” much to my liking, because it doesn’t get much play (except for the requisite old guys group all courses seem to have that dominate the morning hours every day) and so, I pretty much had the place to myself in the afternoons—especially when it’s hot out. Spent the weekend at Lake Travis. It was brutally hot and dry; the wind flet like a giant hair dryer blowing in your face. Played nine holes with Richard in the morning when it was only 85 degrees and rising fast–not too bad. Then played 18 with Jaybird, teeing off at five. It 105, same wind; and we had the whole course to ourselves. Worst thing was, the lake is so low, it was too far to go jump into it to call off like we used to. Long story short, we lived! The guy turned his head slowly, stared at Jaybird with one eye closed and the other one narrowed to a slit. The expression on his face was one that imparted the idea that he was trying to decide if he should fight Jaybird, or leave him alone because he was just plain stupid. Read the rest of this entry »

I have been known to be a bit of a smart aleck now and then. No, no, I know most of you find that hard to believe, but it’s true. Every once in a great while, I lose my mild mannered courteous ways, and say something inappropriate; it happens to the best of us.
My golfing buddy Jay Bird has wandered into the path of one of my salvos now and then, but him being a bit of a wise-guy his own self, he usually walks away none the worse for wear. I got him good one day out on the course though. Read the rest of this entry »

That phrase will no doubt cause many of my fantasy football compatriots—including my two grandsons—to get a wide-eyed and fearful expression upon their face. And, I must admit they would be justified in so doing. If by chance any of that group is reading this, you can relax; I’m not going down that road. Yet! For those who have no clue what I’m talking about, rest assured, you will one day be treated to at least a small sampling of the “tails” of the mighty duck slinger clan of yesteryear. When we lived in the community of Spicewood Beach, out by Lake Travis, the lake, golf course, and lakeside picnic cabanas were the gathering place for the people we liked to hang out with. We’d have barbecues down there almost every summer weekend; I’d fire up my trusty Weber grill, and everyone would bring whatever meat they wanted cooked. Of course, the cooking could not start until I’d finished my daily round of golf on our little, self-maintained, nine-hole course. It wasn’t much of a course, compared to “real” golf courses, but it was free, never crowded, and right next to the lake. Read the rest of this entry »
