Pure Freedom

Are we free? Do we even know what freedom is? It seems to be a fleeting thing; disappearing as we punch the clock, or slide into our seat for first period, on Monday morning. So many times, we feel trapped by our circumstances, and too often we ask ourselves, “Am I really free?” Freedom is a state of mind, and there are times we soar like eagles lifted by the winds of happiness, and then there are times we come crashing to earth in the throes of a life that is sometimes cruel. Freedom… sometimes we just have to race full-tilt toward it, jerk back on the handlebars and let it lift us into the air. Being able to do that, my friends… is pure freedom.

kid on bike 2Freedom is a memory; a memory we can carry with us and relive when life seems hard or unfair. Freedom is a feeling like the feeling I had on that glorious Saturday morning—the first day of summer vacation:

Yes! In those precious moments I was free! Free from the rigors and trials of fifth grade, the screaming and crying at home, and from the very earth. In those few seconds, I felt a freedom that was complete and real, and I wished I could just keep on climbing into the sky and disappear forever.

I Can See!

Sometimes, trying to live a good life is like playing pin the tail on the donkey; you’re blindfolded, spun around until you’re dizzy, and shoved toward the donkey. What are the odds? The thing is, if you weren’t blindfolded, and could focus on the donkey, you might waver and wobble a bit, but eventually you’d get there.

Do-lang, Do-lang, Do-lang

The eighth grade dance! It was without a doubt an event every young boy awaited with a gut-twisting eager dread.

I grew up in the little town of Buckeye, Arizona, and by the time my pals and I reached the eighth grade we knew we liked girls, but weren’t sure why, or what we should do about it. Read the rest of this entry »

Our Way or The High Way

It’s easy to love people who do things the way we think they should do them and agree with most everything we do. And, it’s also easy to not love those who are not what we think they should be and don’t agree with us. We are quick to judge and condemn and slow to love. Read the rest of this entry »

Dreaming Short Dreams

Sometimes a thought comes at you broadside and knocks you for a loop. You start thinking about things, and pretty soon you’re sitting on the curb with your head in your hands. Eventually, you shake it off and finish the walk home. Then, you write it down and show it to the world.

Dreaming Downhill

I remember topping the rise

Picked up a book one night

And the words were blurred

No warning

The boss laughed at me

Said I needed reading glasses

Oh

Dug in my heels

Thinking it was too early

I was too young

To start down the other side

Seemed like a long stretch of level

Should’ve come before the steep drop

Nope

Hit some rocks and flipped out

Into mid-air, screaming and flailing

Grabbed onto a bush

To slow myself down

Slid on my butt for a ways

Through poison ivy

Scratch

Dusted myself off

Zigged and zagged for a while

Going slow, making it last

Started wondering about the dreams

Forgotten… left behind

Should I go back for them

Sigh

Seeing I wasn’t dead yet, eventually

I decided, yes, new dreams

Easy ones maybe

But something to shoot for

Hoping the powder was dry

Trying to recall how many shots I’d fired

Days

dreaming dreams (2)And that’s where you find me today

Dreaming short dreams

Easing down the far side of the hill

The rainbow’s end in sight

Behind that next big rock

Pot of gold there… I think…

Not

There Are No Do-Overs

I read about a young man who had the world in his hands and allowed the coddling lies of drugs to steal it from him. He let himself be pulled into the darkest depths of addiction and nearly lost it all—a promising career in sports, his family, and if truth be known, his life. His mom told him once God must love baseball players. When he asked why she would say that, she said, “Because if He didn’t, you’d probably be dead by now.” Read the rest of this entry »

Part of the Plan

Through the ages—it seems even more so today—the question has been asked; why do evil and wicked people prosper? I’m learning to not be bothered by such things. I have all I need, and what someone else has—whether they deserve it or not—has absolutely no bearing on my peace and joy.

And, to be honest with you, the latter part of this verse is of no comfort to me. Knowing evil and wicked people will not spend eternity with the Lord does not bring me joy. My hope is that all men and women will come to believe in Jesus and be saved.

We should not fret or be envious regarding the success of anyone. We should pray for their salvation, and know that no matter what they might do or accomplish, God is using them in His plan.

Do not fret because of evil men or be envious of the wicked, for the evil man has no future hope, and the lamp of the wicked will be snuffed out. Proverbs 24:19-20

Guy Fieri’s Got Nothing On Us!

In keeping with one of my themes (I have several, ya know) I am compelled to report the following:

We recently took a leisurely, scenic, drive to Arizona to visit my boyhood pal, Barry and his lovely wife, Marilyn. We spent only two and a half days at their home, but it was wonderful. It was as though Barry and I had never been apart, and Sherry and Marilyn hit it off too. I think they enjoyed hearing me and Barry tell our tall tales. Read the rest of this entry »
