We’re Out of Turkey! ~ July 31

No time for a re-write and picture today–it’s moving/retirement day–but thought I’d finish off the Thanksgiving theme with a re-blog.

But we have ham!

Turkey Sandwiches!

Staying with the Thanksgiving in July theme, I have to tell you, I love turkey sandwiches! Those things are better than just about anything! Only thing is, all the family and friends are usually gone and aren’t there to enjoy them with me.

I’ve often mentioned how our family would congregate on holidays when I was a child, and those were awesome times! There was love and peace in abundance, the latter being most prominent after the big feast when everyone was sprawled out watching the football game or napping. Love… well… it was everywhere and in everything we did.

…. and turkey sandwiches!

Mercy, peace and love be yours in abundance. Jude 1:2

Turkey All the Time!

The grocery store we shop at sells fully-cooked turkey breasts in their deli section, and every now and then, Sherry and I will buy one and fix a Thanksgiving dinner. We did so a few days ago, and it was delicious! But more than just the wonderful meal, it gave us pause to think how blessed we are that we can celebrate and give thanks on not just any day, but every day. We are blessed, and our joy is boundless.

No matter your circumstance today, I can assure you the Lord is good, He loves you, and His love endures forever; He will never leave you, nor forsake you, and His faithfulness continues through all generations.

Thanksgiving is not a one day thing, it’s an every day thing!

Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations. Psalm 100

Dreams and Memories

On Father’s Day several years ago, Sherry gave me a card which on the front read, “I love this life we’ve built together.” We have indeed built a life together that is wonderful, and along the way we’ve added many rooms, each built to hold the dreams and memories of that season in our lives together. The end result is not a house of brick and mortar, it is a beautiful mansion filled with peace and love. And… we’re always adding on.

But, as grand as this place is…

lake 11-11-16 quote 2

In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. John 14:2

Far and Beyond

It’s been said we only use a small portion of the abilities of our brain, and I think that’s probably true of our hearts, as well. I believe we’re capable of great achievements with our minds; and, likewise, I believe we’re capable of absorbing and giving much more love than we can possibly imagine.

I look forward to the day when I can fully comprehend God’s love. As of now, I feel I’ve only had a taste of it, and yet even that small portion overwhelms me.

07-19-17 3 quote

But if anyone obeys his word, God’s love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him. Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did. 1 John 2:5-6

Cousins

And, here it is, the real deal hanging in our new living room! And, it’s only fitting that the smaller pictures to the right of the clock are of Ma and Pa, my maternal grandparents. They were a huge part of our lives when we were young.

This painting, “Joy Ride”, by David Uhl—brother to our precious friend, Paula (Polly) Uhl Snyder, spoke to me the moment I saw it.

Memories of my childhood with my cousins roared to life in my mind, especially some of those with my best friend/cousin, Eddy Madden. The joy we shared—all my cousins—as one big family when we were growing up is etched in my memory and never fails to make me smile—and often laugh—when I recall the times we spent together. How lucky were we to grow up in a simple time where simple things—just being together—could live in our minds and hearts forever.

Little Brothers and Others

brothers quote

That’s why I like the Internet. It has brought many of us closer, and though things still aren’t the same as they were back in the good ol’ days, it beats the way it was before the Internet came along.

It’s also true with friends—some I’ve yet to meet in person. The Internet has caused my family to not only grow closer, but to grow larger, and I like it!

Are We Ready?

After all the time Jesus had spent with the disciples, telling them time and again He would return from the grave, they were still frightened when He appeared before them. And, even after He showed them the scars on His hands and feet, they still didn’t think it was Him. What was wrong with these guys?

Probably the same thing that’s wrong with most of us: short memories. We go through much of our time here on earth—especially in the U.S.—living a relative life of ease, never giving much thought to all our blessings and where they come from.

We hear the good news that Jesus will one day return, and we talk about how we can’t wait for that glorious day, while secretly we hope our faith is strong enough to get us into heaven. Why? Why are we troubled? Why do we have doubts?

07-19-17 1 quote

He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds.” Luke 24:38

The Breakfast of Champions

Our daily bread is not merely the food and water we need to nourish our bodies, it is also the love, faith, trust, hope, and knowledge we need to sustain our hearts and minds.

I spend some time with God each morning, reading, writing, and learning about Him, and I’ve come to need this communion with Him as much as I need food and water. I find that when I am away from Him—when my thoughts become too absorbed in worldly matters—I begin to feel weak and helpless. But more and more, as my love for God grows, I’m quicker to realize the symptoms, and return to where His bread is stored.

Bible - quote

Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed. 1 Peter 1:13
